As Winelands Textiles contributed to the “Blankets for Old Bones” project last year, I was approached by Worcester Rotary Club to participate in a golf day in aid of the project. I know nothing about golf and made it quite clear to Rotarian Marcelle van Speyk, the brainchild and organiser of the GiGi Classic Golf Day. Marcelle explained that the GiGi Classic is for ladies that CANNOT play golf and would require either one professional on the team, or just a general understanding of the game and rules. Knowing this, I immediately rallied a team together.
As all the blankets were already distributed the previous year, Winelands Textiles generously donated more blankets to the project. The blankets, along with the Dis-Chem care parcels, were part of each team’s additional entry requirements.
On the 3rd of May 2019, Worcester’s Golf Club was taken “over” by ladies golf teams. The men were our “celebrity caddies”; each matched to a look-alike celebrity like Jeff Bridges, Jonathan Banks, Burt Reynolds, to name a few. Francois Coertze and Joe van den Berg were our South African celebrities, with Sandra Vaughn as MC and Andre van Eeden the celebrity artist.
It was a FUN day with no pressure from anyone on your golfing skills. In fact, most of the ladies enjoyed the game so much that they said they would definitely play again.
In general, I would say the day was a huge success! From the ladies’ enthusiasm, the food, the prizes, the generous donations from Worcester companies, the organisation of the event, everything was perfect.
I felt very proud of Winelands Textiles contribution to the project and know these blankets will go to our seniors in need.
